Spin–orbit coupling induced by ascorbic acid crystals

Abstract Some anisotropic materials form semicrystalline structures, called spherulites, when observed in a polarisation microscope, exhibit characteristic “maltese-cross”-like pattern. While this observation has been hitherto considered as tool to characterize these materials, we show that patterns are associated with strong light’s spin–orbit coupling induced by the spherulite structures. We experimentally demonstrate effects using samples of crystallized ascorbic acid and observing creation optical vortices transmitted laser beams, well formation inhomogeneous patterns. Our findings suggest use some spherulites based on other frequency ranges, e.g. THz domain, where spatial shaping electromagnetic radiation is still challenging task.
